CY TWOMBLY: IN THE STUDIO

Cy Twombly returns to the Museum Brandhorst with a new presentation on the upper floor. This exhibition features a retrospective selection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs dating from the early 1950s up to a painting that Twombly created in 2011, shortly before his death. Throughout his career, Twombly attached great significance to the places in which his works arose. His photography in particular often alludes to the processes and places in which his paintings and sculptures first emerged. Moreover, many of Twombly’s photographs reveal the situations and objects that inspired his work, whether they are images of nature, still lifes, or even visits to flea markets or cemeteries. The simultaneous presentation of the various media in which Twombly worked after his studies at Black Mountain College yields constellations that are exciting and surprising by turns.
