What do you do in the art world?
A variety of professional services for fine art and archives including: * Appraisal Reports for donation, estate planning, insurance or resale * Expert Witness Reports for legal matters concerning personal property * Managing authentication and conducting provenance research * Identifying the best and most appropriate markets for fine art and archives * Buying and selling assistance for new and experienced collectors * Art and archival legacy planning for artists, heirs and collectors including market and museum consulting, and artist estate and collection advisory
What are the most interesting aspects of your work?
I learn new things every day and what I learn builds upon a body of knowledge that is always in practice. It's the continuous pursuit of connoisseurship that becomes a way of life. Each new project brings my training and experience together. My work is international. I’ve developed a network of highly trained and experienced advisors, appraisers, dealers and curators here in Toronto and across the country but also within the United States, particularly in New York and Los Angeles. I get involved with other professional service organizations that allows me to stay on top of what the trends and issues are in insurance, charitable giving and estate planning, and meet other professionals that are as passionate about their careers as I am. And that includes fine art collectors and museums! I find it exciting to work with prominent collectors and curators because they are so passionate about their collections and are extremely knowledgeable about the art market and the artist’s they collect.
Do you have a routine when visiting a museum/gallery?
I find it useful to join an art museum as a member at the highest level as they offer curator and artist talks and small-group events around new exhibitions. I like to attend the art museums often for shorter periods of time and look at one new exhibition and one or two rooms of the permanent collection. That way I can absorb the art to its fullest and take my time. A senior level membership also provides reciprocal admission to select art museums in other cities. I don't rush my time to see everything. I plan what exhibitions and other works of art I would like to see before I go and that includes buying tickets in advance, if required, and making reservations for lunch!
