Can Anyone be an Art Appraiser? Who is Qualified?

There is no licensing for personal property appraisers; anyone can call themselves an appraiser. This can have a direct impact on the services provided; it is important to choose the right person/firm to meet assignment needs. Being able to provide an independent opinion of value is key.

Credentials are important: Education, Accreditation, Experience and current compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Qualified appraisers know the correct terminology and methodology to use. Some art appraisal organizations, such as the American Society of Appraisers, have more stringent educational and experiential requirements than do others. There is a difference!
