Art Appraisals....Organization, Organization, Organization!

Planning and managing your art assets can be a complicated process. Know what you have to understand how to move forward effectively. Organization pays – an inventory and art appraisal are where to start. There are many benefits to an art appraisal.

Asked and Answered

A professional appraiser will know what questions to ask you and how to answer the questions you ask. This will help to determine the best possible pathway to meet valuation needs, and if an appraisal is needed. The type of value used will be determined by the intended use of an art appraisal.

Can Anyone be an Art Appraiser? Who is Qualified?

There is no licensing for personal property appraisers; anyone can call themselves an appraiser. This can have a direct impact on the services provided; it is important to choose the right person/firm to meet assignment needs. Being able to provide an independent opinion of value is key.

Credentials are important: Education, Accreditation, Experience and current compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Qualified appraisers know the correct terminology and methodology to use. Some art appraisal organizations, such as the American Society of Appraisers, have more stringent educational and experiential requirements than do others. There is a difference!

Keeping Current – Art Appraisal Issues in the News are More than Just Headlines

An appraiser who keeps current with the profession will be aware of changes and case law that can affect their practice, standard of care and valuation results. It is important to know and understand how “appraisals in the news” concerning Divorce, Damage, and Taxation (Estates & Charitable Contribution) may be relatable to their clients and you.

The End Result-Goals

An appraiser’s task is to provide the information needed to make an informed decision. Be aware, be prepared and meet success. Obtain the services needed, establish a professional relationship built on understanding, knowledge and trust.
